Stimulation and engagement can retain abilities

Mid-stage dementia is for most people the longest stage and is the stage where stimulation and engagement has the greatest potential to really assist with retaining abilities. Once people are experiencing some positive changes; heightened confidence and motivation follow as will an enhanced quality of life. Being actively engaged in purposeful, meaningful activity has the ability to pump up self esteem and increase zest for life for thisĀ  is part of the human psyche.

The stimulation can take many different forms including the often touted Sudoku, crosswords, brainteasers and computer games but cognitive stimulation therapy, as offered by Memory Matters, offers the most significant stimulation of all, the development of human relationships. This interaction requires that a person listen, comprehend, formulate, communicate, edit and recall as they engage in one to one interaction with another human being. Think too of the human need to share thoughts, feelings and humour. Memory Matters believes that the greatest gifts do not have to be lost.
